This painting reflects the idea that humans are amphibious, a concept discussed by Teilhard de Chardin, the Huxleys, and C.S.Lewis among others. We inhabit more than one world (the biological, the spiritual, the conscious, unconscious, rational, irrational...) and must navigate within them. In this instance, the amphibian is a ballerina calmly strapping up before a performance yet all the while moving in some other sublime frame.
